Players of this style use blocks and counterhits to feed off their opponent’s spin and pace. Both shakehand and penhold players can be found employing this style. One side may be stronger than the other, but the main style of play is still block and counterattack, with the hitting of any loose balls by more aggressive blockers.
Distance from the Table
Blockers are found close to the table (within 3-4 feet), where they can make the most of their opponent’s pace and the wide angles they can achieve.
This style is virtually extinct on the world stage in modern times. However, it continues to be popular at lower levels, where the pace of the ball is not as fast, and opponents tend to make more mistakes.
