Definition: Pretensioned rubber was an innovation by table tennis manufacturers who were attempting to duplicate the effect of speed glue without its use.
The topsheet of the rubber is stretched and put under extra tension when the topsheet is attached to the sponge, often causing a reverse dome effect. When the rubber is then glued to the blade, this extra tension is supposed to cause the rubber to act as if it has been speed glued.
Most players believe that these rubbers are only partly successful, and still do not fully duplicate the effects of speed glue.
